AntiVirus Software Review: This is my long winded review of some popular antivirus software. The short story is that I hate Norton, TrendMicro & McAfee and I really like ShieldPro 2006. DailyTool.com visitors can get it for $30 with Free Telephone Tech Support for a Year and a HUMAN actually answers the phone. As a Bonus, you’ll get 22 Issues of PC Magazine as well!
Symantec’s Norton Anti-Virus worked well for me for years (I thought) but the darn thing EATS your resources while running. Sometimes to the point of complete lockup. This has become increasingly worse with each update. You can’t even THINK about doing anything else while the software is running. I tried to call Norton but it was like trying to get through to the WhiteHouse! I payed for their crappy product and they don’t even have free support. Not acceptable and now Microsofts new Anti-Spyware is Deleting Norton Anti-Virus (not that it shouldn’t be deleted - lol)!

Some time ago I decided to give TrendMicro a try. Same problem, eats resources like crazy and as I discovered later, it misses viruses all the time. The lockup issue is still a huge problem for TrendMicro. Again, I tried to reach them for some tech support. Same crap - no support - unwilling to help (wanted $30) - even during installation!

In my endless search for a better program, I tried numerous freebies. Not ONE was worth the wasted download time so I decided to try McAfee (Enterprise Edition). After a few weeks, I kind of liked the program but I was having the same issues as with Norton and TrendMicro. The darn thing ran too slow, killed resources, missed viruses, etc.
I gave McAfee’s tech support a call to see if there was a way to speed things up a bit. Same crap different program! They wanted $30 for the call, etc, etc, etc. Friday, I ran an update and McAfee tried to DELETE key files on my Hard Drive. Luckily, I figured this out and was able to reverse the process. Many users were not so lucky. In my opinion, any company that would release an update with such a malicious flaw, shouldn’t be in business. I’m done with McAfee.

I decided to do a test on Norton, TrendMicro, and McAfee. I noticed that not one of the programs would catch ALL the viruses. I ran all three programs without quarantining or deleting viruses and all three commonly missed multiple viruses (different ones for each). I did the same thing again - just to be certain. Same results. This to me is unacceptable. I mean really, your job as an antivirus software maker is to catch viruses and none of them are doing it well.
It’s obvious that these companies have become a little too big for their britches. In my eternal quest for some decent anti-virus software, I remembered a friend told me about a product called ShieldPro 2006 by PC Security Shield. They make all the claims just like Norton, McAfee and TrendMicro so I was skeptical about purchasing more crappy software.
I gave PC Security Shield a ring to see if I could get a full evaluation copy of ShieldPro 2006 for a review on DailyTool.com. They actually ANSWERED THE PHONE! It was a REAL - LIVE - HUMAN on the other end! I was shocked to say the least. I scored a free copy and installed it in no time. I had a question about the bundled FireWall software and gave their Free Tech Support a try by calling (561) 994-8184. They actually ANSWERED THE PHONE! My question was solved in under 30 seconds.
So Far - So Good!!!
Off I went to test it against the other three. To my surprise, ShieldPro not only caught all the viruses that the other three caught but it found 7 viruses that were located in 6 year old files I had stored away on my drive. I don’t even look at those files anymore and neither Norton, TrendMicro or McAfee EVER caught them. It additionally caught 3 viruses that were more recent. Again, these were MISSED by the top 3 antivirus programs (some for years). That’s 10 Missed Viruses that none of the “Top Three” software programs caught, and in my opinion that’s 10 TOO MANY!
ShieldPro 2006 is faster than any of the other three programs. It’s a large program (as all of them are) but I was actually able to surf the web while running a scan. This is very important to me because I’m on the computer at different times every day and night. The bundled FireWall software is working well too. It catches any internet access attempt in either direction. It even catches Internet Explorer and the Yahoo Widgets running on my desktop! My previous firewall would not catch those. This is a HUGE plus!
I’m attributing this GREAT AntiVirus Software to a little link under Help where you can Report Viruses. There have been many times I’ve received a virus and wanted to submit it to someone but didn’t know how and didn’t want to waste time trying to find out. This is a great feature and the more people who own ShieldPro, the quicker it will catch viruses.
Overall, I’m Very Pleased with this software. The tech support is tremendous and the price is right. Normally, they charge $40 for a full year of free updates which isn’t bad. I gave them a ring and got them Down to $30 for DailyTool.com visitors through this link. They are including a Special Bonus where you’ll receive 22 Issues of PC Magazine for Free with purchase. I’m not sure how long the price will last…

It’s been over a month and I’m quite happy with ShieldPro 2006. I’ve used their free tech support line twice and they are always happy to help. It’s nice to run across a decent company like this…

I must say, I was excited when I read this review - my system was being ravaged by viruses, and TrendMicro wasn’t doing it’s job. So I bought ShieldPro 2006 on the recommendation of this review.
Unfortunately, it still didn’t catch all of the viruses, and, worse yet, the Firewall wouldn’t let me set individual ports! I tried calling, but got voice mail. So, I e-mailed tech support, and got an automated response saying I’d get a real response w/in 24 hours, which I did. My e-mail to tech support asked how to set ports individually, and what I’d need to do to get a refund (should I decide to go that route - note they say “100% satisfaction guaranteed” on their web site.) They responded asking “Is there any assistance that I can provide you prior to cancelling your order? If there is a technical issue and you would like phone support please call us at 866-615-7443. Otherwise, please confirm your name and order number and we will cancel your order.” (didn’t they read the first question about ports??).
I responded with the same questions. They then promptly issued me a refund, MINUS A $3.00 “Transaction Fee”!!! I e-mailed and called again, and a rather rude and curt customer service rep told me about the very plainly stated return $3.00 charge that CANNOT BE WAIVED! She forwarded me page showing this policy (under their “shipping” policy - http://www.pcsecurityshield.com/policy.asp#shippolicy). However, this e-mail came as one amongst three in a row - the first saying I’d get refunded the $29.99. The second and third saying $29.99 minus $3.00. None of this was consistent nor satisfactory. Mind you, it wasn’t the $3.00 per se, but the audacity of a company to say 100% satisfaction guarantee, charging 10% to do a return (what really was their costs???), and customer service that just plainly, stinks!
I told the customer service rep all this, and she (supposedly) was following along with her logs of the e-mails and calls. She asked, “Sir, what do you want me to do?” I said, “I’d like you to answer the question I initially had regarding the ports.” Her response: I’ll refund your money, minus the $3.00 charge…
sigh…It’s hopeless..
I will not do business with them again!
