FYI: Skype is owned by eBay and just like PayPal, will probably be the longterm leader in the VOIP (Voice Over IP) race. Here’s their press release. On many forums and blogs, current users speak about Skype’s exceptional sound and video quality compared to other services like Vonage, Verizon and AT&T.
The Skype offer was probably rolled out to combat the Vonage announcement of an upcoming IPO. Vonage is seriously hurting for cash. They had 1.6 million subscriber lines as of April 1, had a net loss of $85 million on revenue of $119 million for the quarter ending March 31. For 2005, Vonage lost $261 million on revenue of $269 million. Just an FYI because I think Skype is the way to go!
